TRACEY FAHY // RAMPAGE | The Performance of Violence & the Theatre of Protest
Rampage is an experimental exploration of dance and news photography with sound to create a conceptual art installation. Inspired by William Marotti’s text The Performance of Violence and the Theatre of Protest (about the student riots in Japan in 1968) and the Provoke group of photographers working in Japan at that time. The focus of this work is the riots in the UK in 2011.
Photographs of dancers have been immersed with appropriated* press images of the riots to enhance theatrical expression, accentuating the circus created by the media during the week of rioting; questioning the culture, practices and ethics of the press – particularly pertinent in light of the Leveson inquiry.
*Images converted into audio, then into spectrograms.
